ABOUT
MAKE-A-WISH ALABAMA
®
Make-A-Wish® Alabama’s mission is simple and clear. We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Make-A-Wish began serving the state of Alabama in 1987, but for many years, it operated as a joint chapter with Georgia. Although wonderful wishes were being granted in Alabama through Make-A-Wish Georgia & Alabama, our state deserved its own chapter. As a result, the two chapters were separated in September 2012, and Make-A-Wish Alabama was reborn. Over the past four years, we have fulfilled over 500 wishes to deserving Alabama children.
Our organization is an independent chapter of Make-A-Wish, the premier wish-granting organization for children. We are able to do this important work in Alabama thanks to a powerful network of volunteers, contributors, sponsors and staff members. Everything we do is focused on helping children with life-threatening medical conditions, and we serve them first: more than 80 percent of each dollar contributed to our cause goes directly toward granting their wishes.
But our work is far from finished. Children eligible to receive a wish are ages 2½ to 18-years-old, are battling a life-threatening medical condition that is progressive, malignant or degenerative, and have never received a wish from another wish-granting organization. As the population in our state continues to increase, more children are being diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions every day so our work continues.
We grant a wish to every eligible child referred to our chapter who lives in Alabama, but there are many more who qualify. Right now, over 400 Alabama children are predicted to be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in each of the next three years. Many people do not know about our organization or understand our qualification criteria. It’s our vision to reach 100 percent of the children who would qualify for a wish. This is a problem we can solve.
